Kindred Lutheran Church exists to be disciples and make disciples of Jesus Christ! Learn more about being a disciple below!
“What’s the good news?”
Jesus lived and died and rose again for you. You are forgiven. You are right with God!
“What do you have to do to be saved?”
Nothing. Jesus did everything. It is finished. Listen and believe. Trust the promise!
“What are you going to do now that you don’t have to do anything?”
Jesus doesn’t say “go and do this and then follow me”. He doesn’t say, “Get your life in order, sort out your problems and stop sinning first.” Jesus simply says, “Follow me.”
“Follow me” just as you are, not the way you’re supposed to be;
“Follow me” even if you don’t understanding everything or if you doubt;
“Follow me” even though you are a sinner with many problems and faults.
Trust his promise. Respond to his call. Repent (turn around, change direction). Follow Jesus. Be his disciple. Enter the kingdom. Together let’s be his witnesses! Join us on the journey of a lifetime . . .
“Jesus saves me. Does that mean I have to actually do something?”
Yes—if you follow Jesus! He calls us to radical obedience. Michael Phelps chose an overall life of preparation, of discipline, of training his mind and body so he could win the Olympic prize. In the same way, Jesus calls us to choose an overall life of preparation, of discipline, of training our spirit, mind and body, so we can win the prize—not salvation or even an Olympic medal, but so we can become more like Jesus for others. It’s called discipleship!
A follower of Jesus is called a “Christian” three times In the Bible. In Acts, believers are referred to as followers of the “Way” six times. But the Bible uses the word “disciple” 269 times! When you follow Jesus, you become his disciple.
In fact, Jesus’ final instructions in Matthew 28:18-20 are crystal clear: Go. Make disciples. Baptize. Teach. Obey. Each one of us has been called to be disciples and make disciples of Jesus Christ!
“How do you become a disciple of Jesus Christ?”
At Kindred Lutheran Church, discipleship is a journey, a lifelong process that is described simply as:
Gathered to Grow – Sent to Serve!
Everything that we do in our congregation is focused on this faith formation process: Gathered, Grow, Sent, Serve. It is our way of helping you become the kind of disciple Jesus is calling you to be.
The first step of the journey is baptism.
But discipleship is not a one time event.
We don’t magically become like Jesus when we are baptized.
We don’t graduate from Christianity when we are confirmed.
We don’t become mature disciples overnight.
Discipleship is a lifeling commitment to knowing what Jesus knows, doing what Jesus does and being Jesus for the world….
“What does a disciple do?”
Discipleship is what we are all about. But being a disciple of Jesus is not a self-help project where we make ourselves better or more worthy. We don’t earn salvation! Rather, we grow in grace—grow in seeing how totally dependent we are upon God’s graciousness to us. Discipleship is what we do. Faith formation is what God does. As disciples, we practice the nine Marks of Discipleship as a way of opening ourselves up the the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Together and as individuals, we respond to his call, run for the prize and be a bold, daring, adventurous follower of Jesus Christ who:
Repents and Believes daily
Connects with God and others
Prays continually (See this resource on prayer)
Dwells in the Word daily (See The Essential Jesus)
Worships weekly (See Worship Times at KLC)
Serves at and beyond Kindred Lutheran Church
Gives tithes (10%) and offerings beyond the tithe
“Why am I doing this?”
In a word, transformation. We practice these nine Marks of Discipleship because they help us to be available and willing before our Heavenly Father. They focus our attention on the presence of Jesus and his will for our life. They open us to the Holy Spirit who attunes our hearts to his voice and transforms us to become more like Christ for others.
Remember, we don’t practice these marks of discipleship to earn salvation! We can’t do it on our own and we don’t change ourselves. Jesus promises us the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit to guide us and transform us. We also ask our brothers and sisters to encourage us, hold us accountable and pray for us. Joining a Kindred Huddle can be a great way to do this. This bookmark is a tool for discipleship that can be used in your huddle.
Please contact Pastor Kyle if you need prayer, assistance with discipleship or would like to be baptized.
May God strengthen you and guide you with the Holy Spirit on this great adventure as you live as a bold, daring, adventurous follower of Jesus Christ who is gathered to grow and sent to serve! AMEN
Kindred Lutheran Church exists to be disciples and make disciples of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20) who grow in Christian maturity and become more like Christ for others.
Following Jesus is a journey, a lifelong process of faith formation that we describe simply as: Gathered to Grow – Sent to Serve! This is our vision. And everything that we do is focused on this faith formation process. It is our way of helping one another become the disciple Jesus is calling us to be.
As disciples, we practice the nine Marks of Discipleship. Discipleship is what we do. Faith formation is what God does.
